Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser – he’s a rock star, an
artist, a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors’.
With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hair styles he pioneered in the
1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy, Sassoon revolutionised the art
of hairstyling, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. Sassoon
literally changed the way that women look and cut their hair today.
Spanning 80 years of revolution in culture, VIDAL SASSOON THE MOVIE
takes a deeply intimate look into the life of this extraordinary man,
whose influence far outreaches the industry he changed forever.
A true rags-to-riches tale, VIDAL SASSOON THE MOVIE traces Sassoon’s path from his early days in an orphanage in the East End, to his time as a soldier in Israel, his beginnings on Bond Street, and ultimately to international success and celebrity. Following Michael Gordon, founder of hair care company Bumble and Bumble as he sets out to document Sassoon’s life in a richly visual book, the story comes alive as the design of the book unfolds.
Living through war and poverty, the seeds of his future were spawned as the young Sassoon became driven to rise above the circumstances of his birth. Spurred on by his mother’s dream that her son would find success as a hairdresser, Sassoon apprenticed in a local salon. "I made up mind, if I was going to be in hairdressing, I wanted to change things.” Through tireless hard work and commitment, he struggled to modernise the old-fashioned world of hair; with modern architecture as his inspiration, ushering in the social revolutions of the 60’s. Salons, schools and products followed all over the world, and his tag line, "if you don’t look good we don’t look good” became a defining cultural touchstone.
VIDAL SASSOON THE MOVIE shows Sassoon to be not only one of the great innovators of our time, but a cultural life force as relevant today as ever.

"The film is not just a tale of the swinging sixties and Sassoon's input in it, it also takes us back to the 83-year-old hairdresser's youth, his upbringing in an orphanage and his subsequent rags-to-riches tale."
