Winning this year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes has propelled the Thai director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, into the world’s spotlight.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, a gentle comic fable about a dying man who wishes to spend his final days in the care of close friends and relatives, is his most accessible film to date. Uncle Boonmee travels to a spot in the remote forest, an important place from his childhood and, he believes, the possible location of his former existences. The ghost of his dead wife appears in order to care for him, and the spirit of his long lost son also returns but no longer as a human. In this night-time jungle, Uncle Boonmee meets and recalls incarnations of his past lives and finally treks with his family to a mystical cave where his soul was first born…
