Gone Too Far!

01/10/2014

The UK Gala Screening for Gone Too Far! took place at the Hackney Picturehouse in London last night.

All the best of British were out in force to support the fantastic director Destiny Ekaragha, the wonderful writer Bola Agbaje and all the filmmakers. It was a complete success with the stars walking the red carpet in style! Everyone then headed to the afterparty at the Hackney Empire Stage 3 bar!

The atmosphere was electric and the drinks were flowing. Cameras flashed and it was selfies central while the DJ kept everyone dancing.

Opening on October 10th, Gone Too Far! follows two estranged teenage brothers over the course of a single day as they meet for the first time and struggle to accept each other for who they are. Sparky and distinctive, this coming of age comedy backed by the BFI Film Fund and produced by Poisson Rouge Pictures is based on the Olivier Award-winning stage play by Bola Agbaje, first performed at The Royal Court.

Gone Too Far! is also the feature debut of  director Destiny Ekaragha.

Kieran Evans wins the BAFTA award for Outstanding Debut by a British Director!

At an amazing and star-studded BAFTA ceremony in London last night, Kieran Evans, the director of the Verve Pictures distributed Kelly+Victor, won the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Director. Presented with this award by Steve Coogan, Kieran was obviously surprised but delighted with his award.

"I was definitely not expecting this,” said Kieran. He thanked producer Janine Marmot for sticking by him for eight years, as well as Warp’s Peter Carlton and Robin Gutch, plus Colin Burch at Verve Pictures. He also thanked the city of Liverpool for inspiring the film. He thanked his mum for introducing him to Hitchcock films and his dad for driving him to art college.

Kieran beat off competition from Scott Graham for fellow Verve film Shell, as well as Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson (Good Vibrations), Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr Banks), and Paul Wright and Polly Stokes (For Those in Peril).

Kelly+Victor is now available on DVD and Blu Ray, as well as iTunes, Blinkbox and Virgin Movies.

Kelly+Victor released on DVD + Blu Ray

13/01/2014
BAFTA-nominated director Kieran Evans' devastating story of obsessive love, Kelly+Victor, is released today on DVD, Blu Ray, iTunes, Blinkbox and Virgin Movies.

Kelly + Victor is a haunting, candid depiction of a young couple embarking on a passionate and transgressive love affair, from the acclaimed novel by Niall Griffiths.

When Kelly (Antonia Campbell-Hughes – ‘Bright Star’) meets Victor (Julian Morris – ‘24’, ‘Once Upon a Time’) on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub, the attraction is instant. After wandering through the night they find themselves at her flat, making love with a passion and urgency that neither had experienced before. Both Kelly and Victor are struggling to get by as best they can, while the people around them are choosing illegal lifestyles; she is escaping a brutish former lover, while he is being dragged into a world of drugs.  It’s when they make love that their darker instincts take over.

New Wave DVD releases: Caesar Must Die and The Wall are out on DVD today

25/11/2013
Caesar Must Die and The Wall are available to buy from today in our shop

Caesar Must Die is directed by legendary directors Paolo & Vittorio Taviani and was the winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival 2012:

Each year the inmates of Rome’s high security Rebibbia prison, incarcerated mostly for Mafia-related crimes, put on a play. The Taviani brothers follow the rehearsals and performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a play where the conspiracies and betrayals echo the past and present lives of the prisoners. The actors become prisoners once again as they are accompanied back to their cells. As one of the prisoner-turned-actor remarks towards the end of the film: "Since I discovered art, this cell has become a prison."

The DVD includes 40 minutes behind the scenes and interviews with the actors and directors.

The Wall, directed by Julian Roman Pölsler and starring Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others) is a contemporary female Robinson Crusoe story.
Based on Marlen Haushofer’s best-selling eponymous novel from the 1960s, the film is a highly original exploration of the experience of solitude and survival.

Gedeck plays an unnamed Austrian woman who goes to a secluded Alpine hunting lodge with her cousin (Ulrike Beimpold) and the latter's husband (Karl Heinz Hackl) who, shortly after their arrival, decide to visit the nearest village. When the couple does not return the next morning the woman sets out for the village and discovers an invisible wall, behind which there appears to be no sign of life. The wall now separates her from the rest of the world. Left behind with a dog, a cat and a cow, she must try to survive alone in the forest. She keeps a record of her thoughts, her fears and the hardship she suffers although nobody might ever read her outpourings.

Order The Wall and Caesar Must Die from the Viva Verve Shop (currently on 30% off Christmas sale on titles released before the 30th of September).

Verve Pictures new acquisition 'Benny & Jolene'

18/11/2013

We're pleased to annouce we'll be releasing Jamie Adams' feature debut 'Benny & Jolene', starring Craig Roberts (Submarine and the forthcoming Neighbors, alongside Seth Rogen and Zac Efron) and Charlotte Ritchie (Fresh Meat) as and up and coming folk duo.

19 year old Jolene is having trouble convincing her writing partner Benny to become more commercial. Too many industry types get involved, leaving Jolene feeling dazed and confused, and Benny marginalised.

Now they are on a crowded tour bus on their way to a festival in the most beautiful, yet remote, location - forcing them to confront their ambicions and emotions for the first time.

Can they both get back to where they once belonged, and move forward together, or will all be lost in the noise and confusion?

Ritchie stars as the eponymous Jolene opposite Roberts, with the two joined by Rosamund Hanson, Tom Rosenthal, Dolly Wells, Ian Smith, Nick Mohammed, Laura Patch, and Keiron Self. Adams directs from his own script, and also serves as producer alongside executive producer, Jon Rennie.

Benny & Jolene will receive it's UK premiere at the LOCO London Comedy Film Festival in January 2014 and will open in cinemas in the UK in the Spring.

Stay up to date following the film on twitter @BennyandJolene!

Short Term 12 - Guest Blog by Destin Cretton

31/10/2013

Guest Blog by Destin Cretton, director of Short Term 12.

Since it premired at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, (winning both the Audience and the Grand Jury Awards) Short Term 12 has been traveling from one festival to another, and so has its director, Destin Cretton. When the film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on the 15th of March, he wrote a guest blog for us in form of journey diary about his experience of coming to the UK:

October 11. 14:32: Arrived in London airport with a knot in my lower-back that formed during the 10 hour flight from Los Angeles. My girlfriend (Nikki) and I were greeted with perfect English weather: damp and cozy, perfect for Welly hikes and movies. We spent the weekend bouncing around Kent; visiting the Dickens House museum, eating apples straight from the branch, and hanging with Nikki's lovely family.

October 14. 11:13: Drove up to London, took a night stroll through a park, said hello to Buckingham Palace, and had a delicious dinner at a restaurant that was co-owned by Michael Caine, where I ordered the wrong drink and ended up with something that looked like a pink slushy.

October 15. ALL DAY: I spent most of the day having some lovely conversations with a handful of journalists. I realized fairly quickly that reporters in England ask really great questions, which made the day fly by. That night, we had the premiere of Short Term 12 at the BFI London Film Festival. Nikki's entire family took the train up from Cliffsend & Ramsgate to watch the film for the first time. It was a wonderful screening that sparked some really great conversations afterwards. Then we all gathered for some wine & beer, which sparked some even greater conversations late into the night.

All in all, it was a magical trip to England, and the perfect premiere for Short Term 12.

Win Clio Barnard's 'The Arbor' on DVD!

24/10/2013
We're giving away 5 copies of Clio Barnard's debut feature The Arbor, proudly distributed by ourselves!

The Arbor tells the powerful true story of Bradford  playwright Andrea Dunbar (The Arbor, Rita, Sue and Bob  Too) and her daughter Lorraine.

Andrea Dunbar died tragically at the age of 29 in 1990,  leaving ten year old Lorraine with bitter childhood  memories. The Arbor catches up with Lorraine in the  present  day, also aged 29, ostracised from her  mother’s family and in prison undergoing rehab.              Re-introduced to her mother’s plays and letters, the film  follows Lorraine’s  personal journey as she reflects on  her own life and begins to understand the struggles  her  mother faced. Through interviews with other  members  of the Dunbar  family, we see a contrasting  view of  Andrea, in particular from Lorraine’s younger  sister Lisa,  who idolises Andrea to this day.

Transcending genre and defying categorisation, The Arbor is a truly unique work, a celebration of Dunbar's triumphs and a dissection her legacy, both from a wider society perspective and on a personal level as we witness the pain of her short and tragic life.

VERVE PICTURES ACQUIRE UK RIGHTS FOR ‘SHORT TERM 12’ AND ‘KELLY+VICTOR’

25/06/2013
Verve Pictures have acquired the UK rights for Destin Daniel Cretton’s award-winning feature Short Term 12 and Kelly+Victor, Kieran Evans’ adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Niall Griffiths.

Short Term 12 was the break out hit at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival this year, winning both the Grand Jury Prize in the Narrative Feature Competition and the Audience Award.

Cretton's second feature, after 2012's I Am Not A Hipster, Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace (Brie Larson - 21 Jump Street; Scott Pilgrim vs.The World; Don Jon), a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge – and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher Jr – The Newsroom). But Grace’s own difficult past – and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself – throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.

Kelly+Victor is a haunting, candid depiction of a young couple embarking on a passionate and transgressive love affair.

When Kelly (Antonia Campbell) meets Victor (Julian Morris) on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub, the attraction is instant. After wandering through the night they find themselves at her flat, making love with a passion and urgency that neither had experienced before. Both Kelly and Victor are struggling to get by as best they can, while the people around them are choosing illegal lifestyles; she is escaping a brutish former lover and her best friend is a dominatrix prostitute, while he is friends with two wannabe drug dealers. It’s when they get into bed with each other that their darker instincts take over.

Colin Burch, Managing Director of Verve Pictures commented "We are thrilled to be bringing Short Term 12 and Kelly+Victor to UK cinemas. There has been a lot of buzz around these two very striking and emotionally intense films, both of which are anchored by breakthrough performances.”

Both Short Term 12 and Kelly+Victor will open in cinemas in the UK in Autumn 2013.

'WE SHALL OVERCOME' out on DVD the 22nd of JULY

11/06/2013
Drakes Avenue Pictures will release the ICO's Danish title 'We shall overcome' on DVD on the 22nd of July.

Written and directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) the film is an engaging story about a young boy standing up for himself and what he believes in, inspired by the words of Martin Luther King and the changes in society in the 1960s.

It’s 1969 in provincial Denmark and 13 year old Frits is being bullied by his brutal headmaster as well as trying to cope with his father’s breakdown and keep his family together.
Listening to records of Martin Luther King’s speeches gives Frits the inspiration to fight back at the old world repressive regimes at work in his community and spread the winds of change.

This award-winning family film is full of exquisite moments, beautifully acted and sensitively directed, with a central character that we are rooting for all the way. The film will have additional appeal to fans of recent Scandinavian crime drama, featuring performances from Bent Mejding, Anders W. Berthelsen and Kurt Ravn, all familiar faces to fans of The Killing, seen here in a very different 1960s context.

You can now pre-order the DVD here.

"Leaps and bounds with the energy of Billy Elliot and has a face with a thousand thoughts. Unmissable" The Guardian

"A brilliant snapshot of childhood, We Shall Overcome benefits from strong performances and its lovingly rendered, sun-kissed Danish countryside. It may share themes with countless movies (If…, Evil, Dead Poets Society et al) but it imbues them with a freshness that’s both compelling and moving."
Ian Winterton, Hot Dog

POST TENEBRAS LUX to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on the 22nd of July

30/05/2013
Drakes Avenue are pleased to announce they will be releasing Carlos Reygadas'controversial film POST TENEBRAS LUX on DVD and Blu-ray on the 22nd of July.  The Mexican Director won the Award for Best Director at last year's Cannes Film Festival where the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Sinopsis:
Juan (Adolfo Jiménez Castro) is a wealthy industrialist who has chosen to live with his wife and two children away from the trappings of wealth and the city.
Yet isolation in this superficially idyllic rural landscape seems to have brought little peace to his world. Juan’s marriage to Natalia (Nathalia Acevedo) is suffering under the strain of sexual ennui, the banal rigors of bringing up young children and living in a community where he is clearly an outsider. The morality of family life is further complicated by Juan’s post-colonial Mexican ethnicity and position as an employer and elite landowner in a country with an increasingly divergent wealth divide.

POST TENEBRAS LUX is a gorgeous allusive masterpiece examining marriage, poverty, class, gender, our place in nature and how evil lives with us in the most intimate and ordinary of places.

You can now pre-order the film here.
