Guest Blog by Destin Cretton, director of Short Term 12.
Since it premired at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, (winning both the Audience and the Grand Jury Awards) Short Term 12 has been traveling from one festival to another, and so has its director, Destin Cretton. When the film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on the 15th of March, he wrote a guest blog for us in form of journey diary about his experience of coming to the UK:
October 11. 14:32: Arrived in London airport with a knot in my lower-back that formed during the 10 hour flight from Los Angeles. My girlfriend (Nikki) and I were greeted with perfect English weather: damp and cozy, perfect for Welly hikes and movies. We spent the weekend bouncing around Kent; visiting the Dickens House museum, eating apples straight from the branch, and hanging with Nikki's lovely family.
October 14. 11:13: Drove up to London, took a night stroll through a park, said hello to Buckingham Palace, and had a delicious dinner at a restaurant that was co-owned by Michael Caine, where I ordered the wrong drink and ended up with something that looked like a pink slushy.
October 15. ALL DAY: I spent most of the day having some lovely conversations with a handful of journalists. I realized fairly quickly that reporters in England ask really great questions, which made the day fly by. That night, we had the premiere of Short Term 12 at the BFI London Film Festival. Nikki's entire family took the train up from Cliffsend & Ramsgate to watch the film for the first time. It was a wonderful screening that sparked some really great conversations afterwards. Then we all gathered for some wine & beer, which sparked some even greater conversations late into the night.
All in all, it was a magical trip to England, and the perfect premiere for Short Term 12.
About Short Term 12: Told through the eyes of Grace (Brie Larson), a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers, Short Term 12 is written and directed
by Destin Cretton. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge, and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher Jr). But
Grace’s own difficult past, and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a
gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.
Short Term 12 comes to cinemas nationwide on November 1.
